I have been part of Miami Model Citizens since March of last year and I have enjoyed all fundraisers and volunteering opportunities. But, I must say that joining Miami Model Citizens – Lotus House has been by far the most rewarding one.

What is Lotus House?

Lotus House is an organization dedicating to improving the lives of homeless women, youth, and children. They provide sanctuary, support, education, tools and resources that empower them to heal, learn, grow, and blossom into who they are meant to be.

We arrived at Lotus House on a rainy Wednesday evening. This was the first time the team was spending time in this location, therefore, little was known. All we knew was that we would be interacting with kids while their mothers attended group counseling.

My team and I made our way into the cafeteria/lounge area of the facility and were greeted by a lovely counselor. She guided us to greet the kids and that’s were the magic started. We brought them coloring books, crayons, books, games, play-doh, etc.

The kids immediately wanted to join in on the fun. Connections flowed naturally. I spent most of the time with a few kids that were interested in building train tracks, cars, trucks, mermaids and seahorses. My creative buds were most definitely put to the test yet the kids were captivated by my skills … lol. If they only knew how bad my cars and trains looked. But, that’s the beauty of all of this. They did not care. All that matter to them was the interaction that they were having with me. I could tell that they sincerely enjoyed my company which made this time with them extra rewarding.

We live in a society in which kids are glued to their technology gadgets. They don’t play outdoors, socialize with others, or appreciate the simply things in life. Yet, these kids because of their financial circumstances crave that connection with others. My team and I were hands on the whole time we were there. We made great connections with the kids and could tell that our presence was much needed.

Although, it’s hard for me to fully describe the impact this experience had on me, I must admit that it was a one of a lifetime. I can’t wait to go back and spend time with them again. As a matter of fact, if you are ever interested in joining me, please reach out to me. I know that you would love the experience but most importantly the kids will be forever thankful.
