PROHIBITION MIAMI

PROHIBITION MIAMI, a restaurant and lounge, opened it’s doors on April 2014 in midtown in the former George’s Kitchen space. Taking a cue from its name, the place has a Chicago speakeasy vibe, with servers dressed in newsboy caps and ties, à la 1930s.

The restaurant, located in the former George’s Kitchen & Loft space, is the vision of owner Shawn Shahnazi, who has more than two decades of restaurant and club experience in Miami and was the owner of Karma in Coral Gables and Envy nightclub in downtown Miami.
My girlfriends and I visited the restaurant on Thursday, May 28 to celebrate the Pharmacy School graduation of one of our friends. Some of the ladies had visited the establishment prior to this event so I had heard great reviews. I went in with high expectations and couldn’t wait to experience it for myself.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, I was greeted by a very polite hostess that guided me to my party. This was a surprise dinner so we arrived early. My friends and I ordered a few cocktails at the bar and everyone was pleased with their selection. I ordered a glass of  Rodney Strong

Cabernet Sauvignon which was juicy and fresh with tangy acidity, plum, blackberry and toasty oak; smooth and balanced, long and bright.

Of course, any place called Prohibition better be on its A-game with cocktails. Classic cocktails were made with fresh fruits, individual mixers (no soda guns), and quality bitters. The drinks menu, featuring quality spirits, are pared down to about a dozen selections from the Prohibition era.

The food, by the way, is an eclectic mix of favorites with an emphasis on small plates for sharing. A preliminary rundown of dishes included char-grilled octopus (my personal favorite), escargots, lobster truffle macaroni and cheese, chorizo croquettes, beef carpaccio, and hummus. Dinner-size entrées include steak frites, slow-roasted short rib, Wagyu skirt steak, and pan-roasted salmon with couscous and vegetables.

My overall experience was one of a kind. The ambiance at Prohibition Miami has the perfect setting for a night out with your significant other or a girls night out. You’ll enjoy exquisite dishes, delicious cocktails, and outstanding service. Do yourself a favor and check them out ASAP!
